Panthers 03:14

“Panthers” was recorded by Clark Hubbard at Vanderbilt University in the spring of 2017 and again at Vanderbilt University in the spring of 2018. “Panthers” was premiered at the Lancaster Kiwanis Club meeting on June 29th, 2016 in Lancaster, Ohio.

“Panthers” is a solo for prepared drum kit. When writing this piece, I was listening to the song “Panthers” by Wilco a lot. (My piece sounds nothing like the Wilco track.) Since the Wilco song was so delicate, I decided to write a piece about the other side of panthers – the aggressive, primal side. Rhythmically, this piece is inspired by Balinese kecak and the piece “Monkey Chant” by Wilco-drummer Glenn Kotche. Every time I perform this piece, I change the setup in some way.
The piece originally calls for…

1 Pedal Bass Drum
1 Hi-Hat Setup
4 Tenor drums (covered with towels)
2 Large Cymbals (with sizzle chains)
1 China Cymbal
1 Tambourine
4 Tuned Glasses (descending; F, Eb, C, Bb)

In other versions, Clark is using metal pipes in the place of tuned glasses (the pipes are transposed down from the pitches indicated in the score) and no sizzle chains are used on the cymbals. A tambourine was originally placed on the china cymbal is also absent in other realizations.
