- Stefanie Proulx, flute

Thank you to Tina Tallon for recording the premiere performance.

This piece is about the moments pre-dawn. Many days I will wake up in the morning or middle of the night and need to maneuver through my surroundings in the dark in an effort to not wake up my roommate. This piece begins with the idea of waking up in total darkness, and reaching out into space in order to orient yourself and navigate through the darkness. The latter half of this piece is inspired by the sight of light slowly filling a room and darkness gently being extinguished.

text taken from “Before the Dawn” by Clark Hubbard

lyrics

Before the dawn
Reach into the void

Dark house
Your walls lay creaking

And its dark outside

Slowly fades into view
And its dark outside

And it feels like floating
Reaching out into nothing

And its dark outside

Go out into the light
